heat coloring question

i tossed my bolsters on the stove and they heated real nice. but there were little spots here and there on one of the bolsters. i tried to clean them up good before i did the heat job.
i thought i remembered someone posting about acidtone or something like that. how can i fix this problem. and if possible how can i fix with household goods? i live in an appartment and i dont want too many chemicals around my 3 year old
thanks for the help

you will probably have to refinish the bolster to the point that you had it before the hb- imperfections are not something that can be cleaned off.
then, clean the heck out of it: hot soapy water, blow dry, acetone bath (or some other organic solvent). be certain that you do not touch it with your hands after cleaning! oil contamination is the worst culprit, but any form of crud will affect the evenness of the heat blue finish (but sometimes you may want to do this intentionally). finally, hit it with the heat again 'til your happy with the color.

Still not good for a three year old, but GunScrubber, or any of the spray on guncleaning solvents/degreasers also work well, and may be more convenient for use and storage than a gallon of acetone.

Isn't the main constituent of nail varnish remover acetone? If you live with a woman, you probably have some

Yeah Martyn, it is, but it also generally contains stuff like aqua, detergents (big long horrible chemically type names) &, in the case of Dennis, strawberry perfume , best go to an independent chemist & get some pure acetone.

To this day I swear there's still the faintest whiff of strawberry scent emanating from that knife. If you ever decide to use your wife's (or in this case, daughter's) nail polish remover, make sure it's not scented!

I love how Dennis pretends he doesn't wear nail polish

There was that one night about 25 years ago when under the influence of a certain chemical...and a hot, make-up artist girlfriend...

Gee, those were the days...
