I hope Steve realizes just how full of BS you are Nate. BTW, you haven't officially joined this KITH yet. I know you aren't in a hurry to do a stacked leather handle and you don't have to. You could just cut a chunk out of that old Gibson's neck and use that....

Actually I think Nate should send me the old Gibson so I can test it and see if the neck is suitable for knife handle material.
Should I send him my address? __________________ Stephen Vanderkolff Please come on over and check out my website. http://www.vanderkolffknives.com/ Thanks |

Heck the way I beat on that ol' girl she just may be chunks of wood before too long....but that's what happens when ya gig with a 70 yr old guitar...
And ya know I'm in Ray! But to keep it simple for me I'm just going to forge out a all thread blade.. Should be a real workhorse. ~Nate |

Nate how about some all-thread/rebar damascus? That'd be pretty sweet

I will say this for the newbs, while as Ray has said you don't have to do leather it can be useful as spacers to hide a so so fit up.

Hmmm...
As a full tang guy, I find this an intriguing challenge. For me, designing an appealing stick tang is difficult. The lines never seem right with the guard breaking the flow. Additionally, I prefer the utter simplicity of a blade and handle--nothing more. Let me think about this. __________________ Andy Garrett https://www.facebook.com/GarrettKnives?ref=hl Charter Member - Kansas Custom Knifemaker's Association www.kansasknives.org "Drawing your knife from its sheath and using it in the presence of others should be an event complete with oos, ahhs, and questions." I have One of Steve's Kitchen Knives and after a bit of Sharpening to my liking, I found it to be ( Harden & Tempered Very Well) and holds an edge very well also.
As for this KITH I am not quite sure Just what I have in the works at this time . However, I will let you all know shortly when I get out to the shop and check my "Crystal Ball" / "Scheduling Book" to see the up coming events and needs of my shop. KITH - I'm in
I logged on to the Newbie Chat last Sunday evening. Thank you Ray for hosting it - my questions were quickly answered (guess you hear the same ones all the time). I've been practicing grinding out steel blank scrap from Home Depot.
Gave the KITH challenge some thought - I see the value in it. I'm in, and just ordered some 3/16 1.25"X48" 1084 from New Jersey Steel. So it begins. This one is going to be a fun trial and error lesson. Thanks for the challenge! |

Is it too late to get in on this? I have never done a hidden tang before and have been wanting to try.

If you can have it ready by Thanksgiving, then no. I for one probably won't start until the end of the month on this project.

Richknives,
Never too late. Since you are new I don't know your history but, if this will be your first knife or one of the first, then be sure to look at the Sticky threads at the top of the forum. One is titled BEFORE You Heat Treat Your First Knife and the other is the KITH Preparation thread. Mostly, have fun and learn something new ... |

Not my first Knife Ray however will be my first Hidden Tang. So how will this go? Do we post in progress pics or what? Just Curious
