Small Wheel help!

I am trying to use a small wheel assembly with a Burr King grinder and having no luck at all. It seems to me that if someone made a variable speed grinder for small wheels, it would be in demand. I need one all of the time and end up finding some way to get by. Any ideas out there?

Dave, there are several out there. JL Grinders has a horizontal 2"x72" which can be ordered with a variable speed but these grinders are a little pricey, about $2500 I think. Rob Frink at Beaumont Machine sells one that is 2"x48" or 2"x72" with and optional extension. Knifekits. Com right here sells a 1"x42" with a horizontal attachment but not variable speed. I built my own but not variable speed. I used a slower motor(1750 rpm) with a 2" drive wheel to get the speed I wanted. Hope this helps. Dave

Dave, Rob Frink and the KMG grinder are the way to go. www.beaumontmetalworks.com is the website. He makes small wheels from 1/2" up to 3", the adaptors to hold them, variable-speed motors and controllers, on up to the whole darn grinder. If you had a Bader instead of a Burr-King, Rob also sells drop-in parts to convert itto small wheel. I don't know anything about a Burr-King, though. I do love my KMG!

I also use a home-built with a 5" drivewheel fitted with a 1400 rpm motor. The front assembly is made of 8" section of 2" hollow shaft fitted with highspeed bearings on both ends. Works for me.

I built a 2 X 48 grinder with the shaft being 3/4" and turned down the shaft to (where belt will ride) 2 sizes 3/8 and 1/2 and covered with rubber tubes from auto parts house (these are contact wheels). No platten just backstand idler. They can run for hrs. and never overheat.

Grinder pictures for small wheels

I have had several e-mails on my belt grinder and thought I would post a picture. I love this grinder.
