Two leather sheaths

The first one was a present for a good friend, he made the knife I made for him this sheath

This one I made for me as I am left handed. The knife wasbought at Leghorn (Livorno), Italy and it was my survival knife during 10 years as a merchant marine officer. Inlays are not my strongest well done detail

I hope you like them

Nice work Pancho. Always interesting to see technique and approach from different areas of the world.
I'm sure your friend loved his sheath.
What kind of skin did you use for the panel inlay on your left-hand sheath?

I'm loving that first sheath! I love how you made a pattern with using the tools as the negative (if you know what I mean). I may have to borrow that idea, awesome!

I like the second one too, but maybe to aid your frustration, (I'm no expert) but since the top layer of leather is so thick if you would put an equally thick backer behind the skin it would give it depth and thickness I think it would improve it.

Great work!

Thanks for your comments, I will try again, the back of the inlay is piece of the same leather.

The inlay is coloured iguana.

Best regards

Oh, I think I see why, you have to under-size the backing piece so the frame around it can lay flat.

I use thinner, 4-5 weight, that is hard-rolled for backing on panel inlay work. Glue the panel skin to the backing and skive the edges to reduce the bulk as much as possible around the welt. Helps
rigidity/stiffness of the inlay so it will lay flat.
Never tried iguana, but it worked well with some spotted tagoo (water lizard).

However, I kind of like the natural "puffy" look on yours and was thinking on trying some thin foam backing for a future panel.
