Tanto
First Japanese style Tanto. 1095 tool steel clay tempered hamon. The seppa and habaki are copper and the handle is Black Palm. The saya is popular wood with micarta. The tsuba is cable damascus. This was a fun knife to make and I am hooked now. Next one will be more traditional. Thanks for all of the information I got off this forum. Constructive comments are welcome.

Great looking knife! How was the black palm to work with? I've been dyeing to try it.

Thanks BB, good to be grinding again. Been a little more safety minded- I use a regulator and good ventilation now. I send an email to you awhile back, hope you got it. Say hi to the family.
Dave, This was the first black palm I used. I stabilized it before I drilled the tang. Then I re-stabilized it after I drilled the tang and sanded it down. I think this saved me some grief because the black tubes that run through the wood can flake off the finished surface. Then I buffed it out and it has a nice gloss finish. I used Minwax wood hardner and a homemade vacum chamber. I may have been a bit overboard with the stabilization, however the results came out good. I also wanted to thank Wally Hayes for his articles and imput. |
