flatstock question
Ok guys i read in one of my books that tool steel is sometimes called plain steel.
A buddy of mine who is a welder has some flat stock that is labled "Plain Steel","Hot Rolled Steel" and i was wondering if this might work to make knives. The company that makes it is "National" .If anyting i can use it to practice untill i can order some real flat stock .By the way it is only 1/8" thick is that to thin for stock removal ?Finished knife #1 and #2 just need to figure out how to post pics .... |

I've never heard tool steel called plain steel, but I haven't heard of everything so maybe it is good steel. Without any idea of exactly what steel it is, you should do a quench test to see if it is any good. If it's not good you could use it to practice on, but personally I'd get good steel and use the other for guards and the like.
1/8th is good for a thinner blade, but you won't be grinding the side much if any, you'll just be doing the profile and bevels. __________________ ~Andrew W. "NT Cough'n Monkey" Petkus |

"Plain Steel" or "Hot-Rolled Steel", especially from the source of a welder is generally A36, which is pretty much useless for a knife blade. Also known as "Mild Steel". You're in Texas, so I'd order some O1 or some similar tool steel from Texas Knifemakers' Supply. They're really great to deal with, and the common carbon steels are pretty cheap, especially for the peace of mind of knowing what you're working with.
The mild steel will make for good practice, though. |

Plane VS Plain
Could the reference have been to "Plane" steel? Planer blades are usually tool steel. I recently switched from W1 to O1. Found that O1 can be air-hardened in front of a fan in thin sections. No distortion, either.

Yep,
Found out the hard way (pun intended) that 0-1 air hardens when trying to drill the a hole in some thin 0-1 for a small friction folder. __________________ I am smiling |
