Ebook on knife making

Gubrin found a book you can buy and download on line. There was some confusion about the price and such. I think I understand it now.

The link is right here: The download version is here http://hppublish.com/item360.htm for $24.76

The CD version is: here http://hppublish.com/cat18_1.htm for $30.95

Has anyone heard of this guy or this book?

Steve

PS Gubrin, I saw the link you were talking about. It does download the book automatically. The author sends you a password for the book after you send him the $$. It's confusing.

Thanks for the information Gubrin:cool:

You're absolutely right Steve.

I tried to reach the author 3 times tonight by phone to let him know about the open and unprotected FTP server. When I could not get in touch with him I searched for and found the page on his site that Gubrin mentioned, where the author allows you download the ebooks. That just didn't make any sense. I downloaded one of the ebooks to see if perhaps it was password protected.

The first page of the ebook states:

PLEASE NOTE - Due to the many occurences of illegal pirating and selling of this book, you will need a special password to open this book.

The author is in fact protecting himself from piracy, so I feel a lot better about it now.

By the way, I didn't really want the original thread started by Gubrin deleted. When I edited and removed Gubrin's FTP links from the original thread, I was protecting both the author's work and the the CKD forums against any possible legal actions until I could have a full understanding of what was going on. I was going to leave the rest of the thread intact.

I never thought that Gubrin was intentionally doing anything illegal, but I do know that it is completely illegal to download a "working" copy of anything for which the author expects payment.

No problem SteveS.

I never think about illegal distributing of this book. But when I found that there are some trial password I think that this book is trial too and will stop work some time later ... I don`t know if it stop becouse I delete this book from my computer.

I will download this one more time and rewrite TOC for you here ... So you can check if it`s good or not ...

Gubrin.

Gubrin,
Welcome to the forums. We appreciate you bringing the website and the ebooks to our attention in your original thread. Don't worry, you were never in trouble with us here. We didn't think that you were intentionally doing anything wrong.

Guys,
I just spent a good while having a nice chat with the author of these ebooks (Harold Hoffman) by telephone. Mr. Hoffman did verify with me that he never intended for folks to "directly" access the FTP area where his ebooks are stored. However, since he has taken the step of password protecting the ebooks, it's a moot issue anyway. As far as the Trial.exe file goes, well, if it's not listed as a link in the download section of his site, we're not really supposed to even know that it exists.

Mr. Hoffman was very pleasant to speak with and I have invited him to come join us some time here at the forums. Once I post this message I am going to email him a link to the CKD Forums.
