Old military dagger??
A friend sent me pics of this "dagger" that was given to him by his uncle when he was a child. His uncle said it was very old and had been in the family a long time, and that it had been used in battle. All of his family are of Scottish decent.
The knife is 19 inches overall length, appears to have leather covered handle and an inlay of sorts on the blade (looks like maybe brass or gold?). I would love to find out more details on how old it is, where it may have been made, etc....? Anyone have any information that might tell us more about it? Michael |

Does the groove in the blade go all the way to the tip?
It almost looks to me as if this was a longer sword, that may have been broken and re-ground to it's present shape and length. |

I'd guess it's a broken sword too, but I don't really have anything else...

Make that three votes for a reworked cut down or broken sword. I'd say that it started off life as a smallsword if I had to hazard a guess.

Mike,
A quick search and I found this....the grip or hilt is similar to your....the blade is different. Known as a small sword or Rapier the photo on this sight fits the bill. These swords were used primarely for thrusting. Do a Google search under Rapier and you can read all the details and exact discriptions. Hope this helps?
