Two antique daggers

Well, not REALLY antique, just made to look like it. These two little babies measure all of 6 3/4 and 7 1/2 inches, with 3 3/4 and 4 inch blades respectively. Perfect for slipping into a ladies' purse for that unpredictable blind date...

Forged from W1 with cocobolo grips. The "antiquing" is a mustard and bleach treatment. The sheaths got rubbed across my anvil to give them that worn look.

Thanks for looking!

Ah, now there's an idea! I can see it now: silk, chiffon, ruffles, steel...

Nothing like a nice dagger background by a well turned leg n' lace!

Can you possibly give me more info on your mustard and bleach antiquing treatment? Specifically the process and times etching with each. This look would be great for a Confederate bowie project I have in mind. Much thanks.

Tony
Ought to be able to find several "aging" processes using the "search" function. If not here then over on the Primal Fires forum.

Tony,
I learned this process from Jay Neilson. He uses any cheap mustard, dabs it on kind of blotchy so you get a random pattern and leaves it to dry. Then you heat up some bleach to just below boiling and immerse the blade in it for about ten minutes at a time. Repeat the process up to six times to get the amount of patina you are looking for. I find it works best on heat treated carbon steels, not so much on mild steels or annealed carbon steel. Don't know why... Between cycles, clean off the oxydation with triple - 0 steel wool. After your last cycle, clean with steel wool again, and be sure to soak in water with dish soap and baking soda to neutralize.
Good luck!
Chris
