Tube tang knife blanks ?

Total newbie here..
Just found these blanks at a deconstruction job I was on. What is the purpose of the hollow, round tang? I am supposed to sell these for my company, but I have little to no information on them.
The 3 large ones are 12" total with a 7" blade. the smaller ones are 9" total with a 5" blade.
Anyone know about these? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I can see no particular use for the socket handle knives over more conventional tangs. Maybe they could be wrapped in leather lace in something like a Turks head knots. The main thing is what steel of alloy they are made of and how they have been heat treated. They may be nothing more than knife shaped objects.

To me, they look like hand forged blades possibly forged from some pieces of tubing. The tang really isn't a tang - it is intended to be the entire handle. That's only a guess, of course, but if it is correct then the blades probably aren't made from a blade worthy steel since there isn't much reason for any type of tubing I can think of would be made from a steel that will harden very much....

Ray, if you go to the last picture you can see an uneven overlap where the steel was folded around some sort of a mandrel. That's why I'm thinking some sort of a socket handle but that still doesn't mean that they're not all hammered out of A36 or something like it. They may not even be worth giving away.

Doug,

I did see that but thought that if a seamed pipe had been broken open so that the blade could be forged it might give a result like the pictures. As I said though, that was only a guess and your idea is just as valid and maybe even more likely. Whichever may be the truth, I still think the tube handle is meant to be the handle and not a tang to be built upon. And I also agree that they are probably not worth giving away....

I doubt they are made of tubing, seams are too crooked.

I've seen knives like these forged from flat stock out of 3/32 1080. They get folded around a tapered rod and the blade is forged into one piece about .130 to .140 thick finished grind. Note how crooked the seams on the round parts are. I would have had to tig weld every seam, I told my brother to weld high carbon steel is a pain in the ass, best to braze with silicone bronze. My brother tried to forge a survival knife this way, but he couldn't get the pommels even and he'd grind them flat and tried to tap threads for a cap, he decided that to make it look good was more trouble than he could sell them for. Circa 2003

Ps. decarb was an issue too, they were hard, but I bet they lost a lot of carbon forging two thin pieces into one thick one. O1 would've been a better choice in steels. I wouldn't be surprised if O1 doesn't come in a tube. I remember in a machine shop I worked in they had some 4140/4150 in tubing. Knives could be that, but Rc 57 max hard 4140, 4150 will get harder Rc 60 before temper.
