A little drop point utility

Was feeling a bit lazy to beat on some bolsters so went simple and put some slab scales on this one. The part that bothers be is that since this is drilled for double bolsters, I didn't have a hole between them for going simple. Most variants allow me options but I felt sure this would be a double bolster one like the sig picture knife. Oh well. A tip to drill for any-all options you may want to configure the knife for.

ATS-34 cryo treated blade.

I like the blade finish. Hand-sanded?

Yes, taken to a 400 grit finish.

Want to know a trick on satin finishing?

I stopped doing a 600 grit satin finish for the 400 grit by using a 25% diamond compound on a leather covered stick. Take it to 400 using wet/dry sandpaper and then it looks like 800 grit after about 2 minutes of stroking it across the diamond. I don't really know why it's different than the sand paper, but it is. Also if you missed any previous larger grit scratches it will show them up, but will take them out too.

Your knife looks very nice Michael. I like the all around versatility of your classic drop point and calling it "utility" is appropriate. The carbon fiber handle is very good looking and well done, nothing to dislike at all.

When you mentioned the diamond I've had that on my list. Anything to help ease some of the handwork will be good! After a hand rubbing session the fingers hurt.

Before Id go up to a 1K then down to 600 which was pretty nice. After rubbing them that lazy streak hits so leaving a slightly coarser finish reduced some of the time. Not grinding a square shoulder and sweeping across for a smoother transition was a big time saver with rubbing them out.

There are a couple makers that I thought the finish was at 320 or 220. Pretty coarse for hand rubbing.

A tip and a question Michael.

I typically finish grinding at 220 or 320 if I have some extra belts. Then I start the linear hand sanding with 220/320 to start and ending with the 400 grit. Here's another tip, get the water based diamond compound and then you can add some to the 400 grit sandpaper. It really helps to get those deep scratches out quickly.

I had a question about the carbon fiber scales. Does the carbon fiber material dull cutting blades? I was gifted some CF material, about enough for one medium size handle and I have never worked with this material before. I read its worse than fiberglass and to wear surgical gloves when grinding or hand sanding, but I don't recollect if it dulled cutting blades.
