Case 337-6Q Quartermaster knife pommel removal

Hi - new to the forum and wanting to get started with a repair before I tackle new projects. I acquired a WWII Case 337-6Q Quartermaster knife with no leather washers. I'd post a photo of the actual knife but I cannot yet add attachments.

It is similar to this one except no washers:

I need to remove the pommel and it appears that it is pinned on one side only. Am I correct that I need to drill out the pin to release the pommel from the tang? Searched but could not find info on this repair and was looking for someone with experience doing this.

thanks

Steve

I've never worked on that exact knife but it would be odd for the pin to not pass all the way through the pommel. In most cases, the holes in the pommel would be slightly flared, the pin passed through and just a little bit longer than it needs to be. The ends of the pin are then peened which causes them to spread filling in the slightly chamferred edges of the holes. Then the pommel is ground smooth and this step can cause the joint between the pin and the hole to disappear. You might try just lightly drilling into the pin to the point where the drilled hole just barely exceeds the pin diameter and then stop. Use a punch and a mallet to drive the pin out .....
