Pivot pin and stop pin question
Alright I give up? I need to know the secret to getting a nice ?smooth opening? liner lock.
All of my knives so far are super touchy on the amount of pressure on the pivot pin and blade stop pin. The difference between a nice smooth action and a blade that is so stiff it takes two hands to open is just touching the screw head. So here is what I am doing, hopefully someone can clue me into what I am doing wrong. My blade thickness is ground .001-.002 less than my spine and phosphor-bronze washers. My pins are reamed through the liners and bolsters and the bolt heads are countersunk into the bolsters. I am 100% certain that all of the holes are drilled straight so there should be no binding. So why does the smallest amount of screw pressure lock up my knife???? I would think that I should be able to tighten the bolts up snug.?. Brett |

Sounds like you're simply squeezing the liners and washers against the blade.
I make my pivot bushing about 0.002" longer than the thickness of the blade plus the two washers. That way, no matter how hard you tighten the pivot screw the blade is free to turn. The liners squeeze the bushing, not the blade. I add the thickness of the two liners to that to get the overall length of the pivot pin. The washers are a slip fit over the bushing O.D., so they are also free to turn. Once everything is finished, if there is a little too much clearance on the blade, it's easy to remove a thousandth or two off the length of the bushing to tighten everything up. |

I would say, being an beginning folder maker myself. I would make them as basic as possible until you get them to work properly . Dont waste time on bolsters and such till you get the function working properly. I just now got where I can think about putting bolsters and fancy steel on mine.I stuck with the basic 1/8 PG steel, 3/16 pivots, fat .030 nylatron washers, PG SS 3/16th standoffs and .050 TI liners for a long while. It was a good learning experience.

Sounds like the problem is the spine itself.
Measure the thickness from side to side and front to back. I would guess that there is a difference putting pressure on the pivot. If there is that little differencebetween the spine spacer and the blade with the washers nad it is hard to open normally the spine is the problem. If it is not then it is probly the lock being pushed over to far creating a force lock in the closed position.
