Detent Ball question

I thought I posted this question a couple of days ago, but I cant find it anywhere so I am posting it again.

I have read the tutorial on liner lock folders and I do not understand the purpose of the detent ball. Would someone explain this to me?

It holds the blade in the closed position, so it won't swing open while it's in your pocket.

Is there also a detent on the blade to "mate" up with the detent ball to hold the blade closed or is it merely a tension function?

No, a shallow hole is drilled on the face of the ricasso into which the ball seats when the blade is in the closed position.

Don's right on, thanks Don. I want my detent ball to rest in the edge of my detent hole so the blade will suck in tight.

Think we need a tutorial on this? hmmm...

Hey guys let's not forget that it is now the law here in California that all one handed opening knives need a ball detent or some other mechanisim that holds the blade in the closed position.
