304, 1095, o-1
Hello, New to the forum and new to making Damascus. I was wondering if you could combine the 3 steels to make Damascus (304 stainless, 1095, and o-1). Also if anybody had tried it and how it came out? I also wanted to know what is everybody's favorite combination for making Damascus? Thanks.

I don't work with stainless but 304 is very low is carbon, nothing that I would put into the mix. It would be a bit like using 1010. Also stainless steel in general takes atmosphere control to keep the chromium and nickel oxides from preventing welds. You might be looking at welding in a can to get the job done. This is not the way to introduce yourself to pattern welding.
What I would recommend is that you start out with two carbon steels. Maybe 1084 with L6 for contrast.
Doug
PS Another contrast steel would be 15N20.

Dougs right, don't even throw the stainless into the mix. Without special prep work it wont even weld up, and even then it would be hard to pull off. Go with the 1084 /L-6 or 15n20 for starts. If you want 3 metals add 5160 into the mix. Being new to making Damascus don't try to get to complex to fast.

Ok, A2 is out because it's air quenching. Try The New Jersey Steel Baron. He carries 1084, L6, and 15N20. He also carries 80CrV2 which might be a possibility as well as Hitachi #2. He has so many pages that you may just have to call up one a click on "home" and then "steel selections". He does list 1095, 1084, and 15N20 cut to length for pattern welding.
