Looking for well figured purple heart
Good evening all,
My brother-in-law wants me to make a knife for his daughter (my niece, sort of, it's complicated) and she is fond of purple, do a purple heart knife of some form. He asked for a hunter but I am trying to convince him to let me do a tanto with purple silk wrap but until than I want to track down some purple heart with at least some pretense of grain. I've seen some burl in the past but am coming up with blank on searches. Thanks, Jim __________________ I cook with a flair for the dramatic, and depraved indifference to calories |

Jim
Go to Bad dog Burl Source and click on knife scales. they have some nice double dyed boxed elder in a violet/teal color lots of grain. looks good for that color. Have you thought of some of the composite acrylic material there is lots of different colors to choose from. Good luck on finding the right purple with grain. |

Amigo, it's entirely possible I have some decent purpleheart in my garage. If you're still looking, I'll see what I can dig up. OK?

Thanks TJ.
Let me know what you find. On dyed woods, they look nice out the door but I have a purple dyed set of birdseye maple where the wood color has faded to a greyish purple over the last 5 years. Jim __________________ I cook with a flair for the dramatic, and depraved indifference to calories |

Have you considered Kingwood ? It is purple like purpleheart but in my experience has much more figure than the purpleheart that I have used. Both need to be stabilized otherwise th purple oxidizes to a deep brown.

OK, sorry it took so long but my garage is organized like my life - not at all.
I've got a nice piece of purpleheart about 2 1/2 in. X 1 1/8 X whatever length you need. PM me and I'll send you some. __________________ God bless Texas! Now let's secede!! |

Since you live in Richardson it wouldn't be much of a drive for you to go to Woodcraft in farmers branch. They have lots of purpleheart and other exotic woods. You can buy small turning blocks or slabs from 1/8 - 1/2" thick. That is where I buy all of my wood, and their prices are decent too.

There is a woodcraft in Addison also with is alot closer to you. It's on the corner of Marsh and spring valley. They have a great selection of wood, tools and when a few knife kits.

Purple heart will turn a pretty gray color if it is not UV protected.
