Thanks to everyone here !!
I have been very fortunate lately with my work. I run a restaurant just outside the Purdue Univ.
campus. I get a lot of profs and teachers that come to dine with me. The word has gotten out that I make and sharpen knives. Purdue is an AG, Engineering, and Pharmacy school. I have really gotten to know many of the Doctorate's/Prof's from the forestry school. We made a deal, I sharpen their knives and they will give me something useful each month. No clue, but thought I couldn't lose. Here is what I have received for the past 3 weeks: Another professor has been doing studies on the African Blackwood for the Selmer Co. (makes clarinets and oboe's). He said all the testing was done and this is premium wood. [IMG][/IMG] Now my mechanical engineer professor caught wind of this and we made the same deal. Here is what he brought me. 1/8"x36"x42" 304 SS and 1/16"x30"x36" 316 SS [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] And lastly, a grand prize !! As appreciation to our restaurant and our employees, our regulars and staff took up a collection and got me this. [IMG][/IMG] I really want to thank all the members of The Knife Network for always helping and giving the best advice to any situation that another member could ask ... Honestly !! With out many of you, My passion for knife making wouldn't have spilled into my "real job" life. This has brought me and my employees and guest closer together. Again, Thank you !! Ahhhh! Good to have skills others don't posses. Looks like some great plunder. The ol' Wood Tech book was very handy back in the day.
Just remember that the 316 SS is not blade material, but great for guards and spacers. One of my students is a "cat squeezer" and has made his own pipes. He uses a lot of AB. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

On of my favorite parts of smithing isn't the stuff I get to make but the people I get to meet. Looks like your developing those kind of relationships too.
