What temp should i heat treat 1085at and how long should temper be? Thanks

Temperature of the temper heat will depend on the use the blade will be put to. For a slicing/cutting blade that won't be subjected to much chopping I would start at 375? for two 2 hour cycles and check the edge by seeing how well it will chop into a 1/16" brass rod. If the blade chips after that I would grind them out and repeat the temper at 400? for one two hour cycle.
If this was going to be a big chopper I think that I would start at 425? for 2 two hour cycles. A sword I might start at 450?. Doug __________________ If you're not making mistakes then you're not trying hard enough |
