Question Need a knife identified

My grandfather recently gave me an old folding knife which has a blade, bottle opener, screw-driver and some sort of spear.

The utilities are made from steel (non stainless).

There is a coat of arms on the handle with the insciption:
Quote:
BE PREPARED
My father believes this knife may have been made for boy Scouts.

My grandparents say the black part of the handle is made from some kind of animal bone.

My grandfather gave me the knife with a case, but I have no idea whether it actually came with the knife or not.

The back of the case says:
Quote:
MADE BY R M WILLIAMS P/L SA SOLID HIDE
Does anybody know where this knife came from and what year it was made in?

Also, does anybody know what the 'spear part' is for?

Thanks in advance.

Yes that is a boy scout knife, the handle is a jigged bone. Not sure but when I got one it didn't come with a pouch or sheath so I am pretty sure it is not original with knife. As for the punch, it was a multipurpose item, you could use it for many things.

I am not an expert on BS knives. Would have to see clear pictures of the stamps on the blade, both sides, so I could see, or estimate when it was made.

Thanks for the reply.

My camera is a bit dodgy so I don't think I'd be able to get any clear pics of the blade. Do you have an estimate on how old it is?

I would say 30-40 tears old. That is just a guess.

The awl was for punching holes in leather. There are quite a few collectors of Boy Scout knives. Depending on rarity, that one could be worth at least 50 and up to a couple hundred bucks. Don't chuck the case. If it is original it adds to the value. Being marked by the maker, if it goes with another knife, it could have its own value.

This guy might be able to put a value on it.

I can't add anything to what has been said about the knife except that it looks a lot like the scout knives I knew as a kid but, in relation to the pouch I would say it one of the many products of RM Williams, a bush outfitter from Adelaide, South Australia.

RM Williams, the founder, passed away a couple of years ago and was and still is a real bush legend in Australia. The company is still very much alive and well and still offers a couple of folder pouches in their product catalogue.

Hope this is of some help to you.
Cheers, John.
