The forums are permission based.

As recent as yesterday, we were allowing unregistered users to view and read all boards, with the exception of a few subscribed boards. Due to the recent load problems, I made the decision to force registration and login as a prerequisite to viewing the forums. This was done to cut down on the number of unregistered viewers using the forums until we could determine what was causing the load issue. The problem with someone hitting the site registered as "guest" is that you can't easily track down their pathway in the logs. We're trying to determine what is causing the load issues. I didn't want to shut down the forums entirely, so I decided to allow members to continue to access the site until we could figure out what the problem was.

My thinking is ...
If we have visitors who don't care enough for the site to register, then why give them the remaining available server resourses when we have daily registered users who depend on them? Registration and login is a small price to pay during this time.

How is the forum performance today?

Alex

I haven't had any problems getting into the forums since you began requiring the login, Alex. - Jim
