Father's Day Gift
My newest creation inspired by Ray's kitchen KITH
Wanted to make something that my dad would use and be proud of. It was a two fold gift ... after making the knife, I took it to work and had to make sure that it was going to be good enough to cut small and large fish so I filleted a beautiful salmon and took both to him and enjoyed both that night. 440C Stainless (blade design WAS copied from net) 9.5" blade 14.5 overall Homemade "mycarta" burlap camo handle Homemade Mosaic pins - West System epoxy Thanks to Ray and for looking !!! Very nice Troy! I am sure your Dad loves it! Did you do the HT yourself? And did you grind the bevels before HT? I know the KITH 440C blade I made was a bear to grind post HT, just wondering how others fared grinding 440C thin. Can you also tell me how thin the 440C was you started with and where you got it? Thanks, and all the questions are because I want to try to do a filet knife myself. Good luck!

Thanks Fulmaduro and Ray !!! I got the steel from AKS: http://www.alphaknifesupply.com/blad...ls.htm#BS-440C
I had a local HT'r do it. I bought the .108" and did a full taper like I did with the KITH. The heel is .09 ricasso is .075 and tip is .025 The only thing I did was to cut in the plunge lines and take the edge to .04 (afraid of warping at HT) Of course, I cut all my pin holes first. After HT, I used the new Trixact belts I bought for the KITH. X100, X65, X45, X15 final then hand sanded up to 1k. It did take me awhile because the blade kept heating up and I was not wanting it to warp out on me. I would make one or two passes then dunk. I am very happy with the results !!! The HT'r did a great job !! Not too stiff and not too flimsy. It cut that meat like butter. I used my new Tormek wet grinder for the primary edge (25 degrees) and then used a King 4k whetstone after and then honed with white compound. I hope that answered your questions. I'm still learning as I go with a LOT of friendly help!!! My next project is to remake my KITH again and see if I can do a better job of it. Troy |

Very nice! Did you use a backing board or sacrificial metal bar to grind the blade? With the thin flexible blade I would have afraid it would bent away from the belt as you grind.....
Good job! __________________ AT "We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow, And watch where the chalk-white arrows go To the place where the sidewalk ends." Shel Silverstein |

Unfortunately ATalley, never even thought about using a board or bar ... I just kept changing gloves
and burning the **** out of my thumbs and fingers. I used the lightest touch I could on the belts. I will have to try your suggestion on my next project. So how would I fix the blade to a board or metal bar and still stay in control of the grind? Wouldn't it have to be clamped or fixed to them so how? You have me curious now. Troy |
