Quench Plates
Guys-I just took delivery of my HT oven and I'm looking for some aluminum quench plates. I've priced the at USA Knifemaker Supplies but thought I'd ask around to see if there were any less expensive options out there. I don't mind scrap either.
I'm looking for something in the neighborhood of 1"x12"x18". If anyone knows of any please let me know. Thanks! __________________ Mark |

In my area there a few Alro steel locations, they have a huge off cut rack and aluminum is $2.99 a lb. We also have a Padnos medal recycling plant, and i can get aluminum scrap for around 80 cents a lb. Alro has a location in Greensboro. I would Google to look for local steel retailers

This is how I fixed my Quench plates with a Harbor Freight wood working vice mounted Vertical , It also has a quick release .

Great idea Art! I may have to try that when I get all my HT stuff set up.

You don't need a lot of pressure on the knife just snug it up and you go from 1950 deg to hand hold in less than two minutes . And it does one great job .
And the knife will be straight . |

Why not visit your local scrap yard? And steel plates work fine too. I've always used scrap steel about 3/4" thick.

Guys-Thanks for the responses and ideas.
I hadn't even thought of scrap yards but that's okay. I bought a bundle of aluminum scrap off of eBay for $75 with free shipping. The bundle has 6 pieces total but 2 of them are 1"x8"x14" which will work great for me. The other 4 pieces aren't quite as big but are still good sizes for quench plates so I'll probably keep 2 pieces as a backup and sell the other 2 pieces or... I may sell all 4 pieces. Again-thanks for the responses! Mark PS-the next time I go looking for something like this I'll start with the scrap yard. I made the mistake of calling some recycling companies instead of scrap yards and discovered real quick that they don't sell to the public. __________________ Mark |
