Will the nickel show

I'm thinking of buying some Damascus made with 1095 and 15N20. After hardening and etching will th nickel show well? Thanks Frank

HI Frank!

There will be a good contrast between those two materials, however, don't expect it to be as brilliant as if pure nickel were used in the mix. 15N20 has a 1.5% nickel content. Much will depend on your etching/finishing procedure, but again, the contrast SHOULD be good.

I too have a question on nickle.

Will Ferric have any effect on the nickle in the mix? Or will it have a shiny appearance?
Ive wanted to do some work with it and would like to know what to expext.

Thanks
Mike

Nickel is resistant to just about any etchant you would find in the knife shop. The higher the content of nickel in an alloy, the less effect an etchant will have on it. The absolute best contrast comes from pure nickel (usually labeled as "Nickel 200") As with most things, theres a catch/trade-off..... Nickel does not harden/is not heat treatable. If it crosses the edge of a blade it's like having aluminum there as far as hardness and edge retention goes.

Nickel will generally retain whatever finish you put on it prior to etching. Likewise, it will not blue either, which means if you use high carbon and pure nickel (like I do with the damascus writing pens I make) the contrast is very brilliant.

Thats what I was hoping to hear! I am planning on doing a high contrast twist bar as the top portion of a composite billet.
Thanks!

God Bless
Mike
