Off Topic, Especially for ED, New Lead Slinger
Ed, Thought you might enjoy this one.
I have been wanting a thumper for about a year now. This was the next on my short list. Came in last week. It is a .458 Socom RRA upper and S&W lower with a magpul stock and limbsaver pad. 600 bullets and 150 rds of brass. Ready for some new glass. Have to save up for that one. Just loaded the first work up. 25 rds each of 300gr hdy JHP and FTX in a load ladder. . Man these are big projectiles The bullet alone is larger than a 9mm cartridge. R-L 9mm round, 300gr HDY FTX .458, 45 ACP round __________________ http://www.woodchuckforge.com Avatar, Scott Taylor Memorial Scholarship Knife Photo by Bob Glassman Chuck Richards ABS J.S. Issat a .230 gr. .45 ACP Ball on the right?
That .458 is an unusual looking round indeed. Whats it meant for, varmints? |

Yes that is a 230gr .45 acp round on the right. The left is a 9mm round. It has the same ballistics as a 45-70 so it will take anything it will. It is just in a more compact platform making it easier to pack around. It uses the same mags as the 5.56 just single stack. I can fit 11 rounds of .458 socom into a 30rd ar15 mag. I got it for a pig gun specifically but the more I research I am liking it for a close range gen purpose hunter. Short range is 200yds or less. Have not fired it yet, reportedly it kicks like a mule. Equivalent to a 12ga 3" slug. Sounds like fun to me though.
One big thing is the selection of bullets. I can get from 100-600gr projectiles. I have heard reports if it taking small game through moose and some in AK are using it now over the 12ga slug guns for griz protection. I think it might turn into my goto hunter for most of what I do. We'll see when I work up a load. __________________ http://www.woodchuckforge.com Avatar, Scott Taylor Memorial Scholarship Knife Photo by Bob Glassman Chuck Richards ABS J.S. |

Yea, I am glad I can only fit 11 rounds in a 30 rd ar 15 mag. It is not going to be a bench gun for sure. The limbsaver should help a lot. If not then there are a couple more recoil aids I can use. They don't call it the hammer for nothing.

Saweetttt... I was looking at those last year.. My waterjet guy was actually building custom mags for those.. Splitting an AR mag and reconfiguring it then tig welding everything back together to make a high cap mag for it!! Nuts!!!!!!

Well I took it to the range today. Let me say, I am pleasantly surprised at the lack of recoil. I was building myself up to a major shoulder buster and it is no more than my .308 bolt gun. Now the limbsaver might have a lot to do with it but still very happy. The weapon performed well over-all. It fired and ejected all rounds, custom and reloads as it should have. I had heard some horror stories of malfunctions but it ran great.
As for the shooting, Hmmm, I was having a bit of a problem with the scope base a Burris PEPR lever latch. The rear latch would not lock down. I could not get a consistent grouping. SO I took it in to the local gunstore and we fixed it. So I will have to go back to the range in the next week or so and try again. I could get 3 to group well but then major flyers. I noticed the problem but I had shot most all my rounds. Even so it is accurate enough to hunt with. As I say it is Minute of Hog. All shots would be in the kill zone out to 150yds. Which that is what I was hoping. I will say this gun is a pleasure to shoot. I think I am going to like it even more than I thought. Oh by the way, since the .458 SOCOM is called the "hammer" I decided to name this gun. I named it Beaudry after my power hammer. I know corny. __________________ http://www.woodchuckforge.com Avatar, Scott Taylor Memorial Scholarship Knife Photo by Bob Glassman Chuck Richards ABS J.S. |

Took Beaudry back out yesterday. Got the scope mount bracket fixed and tried a few more handloads. Much better results. This was only 50yds but still not bad for a gun that is not known as a tgt shooter.
That is 5-5 shot groups. The low right shots were cold shots. I cleaned and let the barrel cool between sets. That was interesting that they would all do similar. The center group was 2 shots then scope adjustment. Now I need to take it to the 100yd range and then dope it up for 200yds for absolute max range for this platform. __________________ http://www.woodchuckforge.com Avatar, Scott Taylor Memorial Scholarship Knife Photo by Bob Glassman Chuck Richards ABS J.S. |
