Wooden Sheath Help

So I don't really need help with the sheat construction per say, but a customer wants a strap to put the sheath on his belt, as I think any sheath should be able to do, and I'm unsure about how to go about it on a wooden sheath. I also don't want to wrap the wood with anything.

So this is the design I was thinking about and wanted some input. I'm thinking about also about trimming the leather straps so they arent just straight and boring. Also the sheath wont be blocky, I'll sand the extra wood on the strap side to some sort of concave curve.

Anyone think of a better way about going about this. Otherwise I must order yet more blackwood.

Get rid of the top layer of blackwood.
make a slot in the outside blackwood and feed the leather through and attach between the balsa and the blackwood.

remove the outside (second layer) of blackwood. on the remaining layer drill holes 1" or so down from the top for rivets. rivet the leather to the wood.

The rivets would have to be on the edge where the steel liner is, otherwise it would obstruct the cavity for the knife. Those edges will be rounded so not sure how leather would work, it would have to be wide.
