Smile First kit on order

Just ordered might first kit from knife kits.com and have to say that I am going to do few of them. I believe I got a skill level three set which shouldn't be out of the realm of possibilities to do a nice job on. Got mexican cocobolo as the handle scales. Any advice on working up the handles would be awesome being as the exotic woods arent exactly in abundance for everyday use around here.

Mostly all you need to do is sand to shape for cocobolo. The oils in the natural wood are great at preserving the material, in this case. You can also take the finish to a highly polished surface by increasing the grit of the sandpaper that you use. The finish on the handle below is only 600 grit. I find that to be perfect for what I like, but others like to take it higher.

Be careful with cocobolo dust - some people are allergic to it and can break out in a rash. It doesn't bother me, but I know some knifemakers that have to be very careful.

Getting close to wrapping my first kit knife up and have to say everything went rather smoothly. Only problem that seems to be coming forward is that the bolsters are slightly of from the tang of the knife and hand sanding them is taking forever. But I guess if that's the only complaint then I would say the kit was pretty awesomely done. Love cocobolo didn't have any reaction to the Mexican kind so that was good. Absolutely love the color and grain in the scales I got. Huge shout out to knife kits.com for a solid kit. Will post pictures after I get the fine finishing work done.

Here are some photos of the Modern Skinner. It's a killer design, very flexible! I love how it looks as a tactical take-off.

You want a little extra meat on the bolsters. This helps you sand it flush with other parts during finishing.

Feel free to post your own modern skinner images in this thread, if you have them.

getting there slowly but surely. Going to be putting a light wax finish on the coco and see if it gets rid of the gaps in the grain from buffing. already chomping t a new one to keep practicing on the basics.
