Question A Sheaths Lifetime?

As a general rule on a fixed blade knife say a bowie, how long should a sheath either of nylon or leather last you?

Spontoone----That is a question that depends on a variety of conditions... I am not familiar with Nylon or plastics so can not comment there. As far as leather is concerned it is similiar to the care one takes of themselves. You take GOOD care of yourself and you can expect to have an extended life. I have seen leather holsters and sheaths that have been in use for over 65 years and are still a viable product with years to go. Forget to change the oil in your car and you can expect its early demise. Leather is no different!! ---Sandy---

Leather comes from something living and it needs to be maintained. You don't have to look around much to find an old bayonet sheath or belt that has been in an attic for years and is all dried out and falling apart. On the other hand, you don't have to look far to find sheaths or saddles that are very old and still in working condition because they were maintained.

Nylon has a pretty good affinity for moisture and can be damaged by swelling and shrinking with moisture changes. Of course, on this forum using a nylon sheath is on par with drinking soup with a straw. It's stuff well suited to those $3 knives from China or Pakistan.
