Twisting damascus

I am in the process of making a damascus guard for a dagger. I need to take a flat piece of damascus, keep the centre flat and twist the ends into the wings of the guard. I have no idea how to do this. I do not have a forge but do have a blow torch. I appreciate the help.

Shouldn't be too hard. I'd take a piece of mild steel and do a mock try. Better to mess up on mild steel than that Damascus. Normally I'd put it in the vice, heat the section I want to twist and use a twisting wrench. You should be able to use vice grips and clamp them in line twisting it like a screw driver for a small piece while heating it with the torch. Good luck.

Stephen,

To twist Damascus safely it's best to do it at welding temperature. If by a blow torch you mean an oxy/acet torch then you can reach that temp. If you mean a torch without oxygen like a propane plumber's torch then it will be difficult to get what you want done.

There may be some alternatives that could work depending on what you need exactly. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.

Gary
