Learning to Grind
What is the best/easiest blade shape to attempt when learning to grind? I was thinking of either a sheepsfoot or tanto? |

Kevin, if you are flat grinding, a tanto is probably the easiest. If you are hollow grinding, a simple 4" drop point blade is an excellent place to start. Work with inexpensive but good stock (O1, for example), and be prepared to discard a few blades. If you get lucky (and work slowly and carefully), you might get a keeper right out of the chute. If you grind a good blade out of junk steel, it might not be hardenable, and you won't know how to heat treat it even if it is. The drop point will immediately expose areas where practice is required, and that, after all, is what we all need. |

Kevin, If I may add my two cents here, find you some wooden lattice material and practice with it.It will give you and ideal of what to expect when you start working the steel.I have not personally used it but Know of those that have and have had real good results their first time with steel. Hope this works for you and maybe save you a buck or too in the process. |

Learning to grind
You might find it useful to imagine two spots of light on the centre of the grinding wheel and 1/8" either side of the belt middle. If you keep what will become the cutting edge in psition just "touching" the bottom of the light spots as you grind the blade from ricasso to tip you will soon develop a hollow grind which is generated from the cutting edge and therefore more true than any jig ground edge. Start at the cutting edge and lean the grinds progressively back towards the spine of the knife and you should soon have a good hollow grind. If you use this same system on the platen you can prodice good flat grinds. Practice on wood is a good plan but use new sharp belts. Good luck with all your grinds! |
