using metal bandsaw for wood
I just picked up a 4 X 6 horizontal vertical metal cutting bandsaw to replace my old 3 wheel model. From the sounds of it many of you have this same bandsaw and are using it for both metal and wood. What blade would you use to cut wood using this saw? What modifications would you make for this to be good for both metal and wood, ie do I need to figure out how to speed it up when I switch to wood cutting?
Thanks for the help Steve __________________ Stephen Vanderkolff Please come on over and check out my website. http://www.vanderkolffknives.com/ Thanks |

I don't have that bandsaw but I just put a wood cutting blade (sometimes) on mine and cut away. The slow speed will cut the wood without a problem, it is just a little slower but not enough to mess with figuring out how to speed it up.

Steve, like you said many of us have that style of saw.Others may differ but I use the same blade and speed for both.For the small amont of cutting done on scales for instance, it's not worth the time to change the speeds.When cutting large amounts I have put on a coarser blade and sped it up some.Your saw should have triple belt pulleys.I set mine on the slowest most of the time.Dave

I use the same blade
It originated out of laziness, but I use a 14tpi bimetal blade for just about everything. Steel, micarta, G10, woods, natural and stabilised. I have a 10tpi for wood cutting sitting unused. I tend to use very dense woods like Gidgee which go well with tight teeth saws. Also, I am always worried about ripping out bits of burl, even when sawing stabilised woods.
It may have to do with speed. Mine is a metal cutting bandsaw - basic one and only has 3 speeds - 60, 120 and 220fpm. I use 120fpm for everything. I suspect that if you used a much higher speed eg.- 300+fpm, then a larger toothed blade would work better. However, for the relatively thin slabs I tend to cut, the finer teeth are better. Thats just me, maybe. Cheers. Jason. __________________ JASON CUTTER BLADEART Jason Cutter @ Dr Kwong Yeang Knifemaker, Australia (Matthew 10.16) |
