Randall Police Inquiry
Cracker,
Did you sell this knife not too long ago? If it's the same knife, then I suspect this auction is bogus: http://cgi.ebay.com/Randall-Model-7-...QQcmdZViewItem Thanks, Ron |

Ron,
....Those PICs look very familiar. I think I remember them from within the last couple of months. I did a search on Ebay for closed auctions on Model 7s and did not find it. Jeff |

Seems strange a scammer would give such a detailed answer to a question then sign his name to the end. The rough condition to the offside should identify it pretty quick. Bo, thanks for all the neat oldies you post.

Jeff: It's very unusual in that it has a brass butt cap which you rarely see on a 40's knife. Everything about the knife and sheath seem identical and just too much of a coincidence. Hopefully Cracker will drop by soon to shed more light.
Hammerdown: I agree. When I saw that the guy answer the question in detail and sign his name I was a bit surprised. Best case is that even if the guy really does own the knife, his claim that "you will see a pitted grain near the guard, typical to custom knives of the period and caused by a difference in the finishing. It is not from oxidation" is a crock! Note that Cracker's knife had quite a bit of pitting on the backside just like this one. Glad you enjoy the old ones |

... A google search does reveal an address and phone number for a James C Horak in Fort Worth. His name along with the Fort Worth search words did come up on a couple of websites. It looks like he may be interested in antiques. An antique collector or dealer certainly might run into an old Randall in an antique store or at an auction. Could be this guy really has and is listing this knife or that someone has hijacked his Ebay account or that a scammer just picked the name out of thin air or any number of other scenarios.

How about asking for a specific photo of the buttcap or something?

Hi Guys!
Isn't it quite possible that Mr. Horak actually possesses this old Randall. The ones with brass butt caps may be rarer than those with aluminium, but there have to have been a fair number of them made, n'est pas? Also, aren't stacked leather handles the most common for the period; and carbon spots and pitting on the blade is usually the norm form these old timers, no? I'd bet that this is a perfectly legitimate auction. Come on Cracker, please clue us in. If I lose I'll eat my hat. Cheers! David __________________ It takes less effort to smile than to frown ! |

David,
There just weren't that many like that one made, let alone the number that survived. I will be happy to furnish the salt or tabasco or whatever seasoning a moose prefers with his hats Best, Ron |

....I am prepared to eat my hat but I still have the very strong impression that the PICs are familiar. Where Ron seems to recognize and remember the handle and butt cap I most remember the slightly flared sheath throat and the rivets and the look of those bare and possibly scratched brassy looking buttons.

Cracker just got back to me: He'll look it up when he gets a chance. I should hear back from him soon.

There's been a second Q & A. The seller is looking more and more legit! I still want to get pics of Cracker's knife and compare.

Didn't someone suggest one time to ask the seller of suspected frauds for more pics? Maybe asking for a closeup of the offside to see the extent of the damage would't hurt. Model 7's appeal to me, especially old mellow yellow stags with finger grips.

Here is Cracker's comment: "Looks a lot like it but mine had an odd (darker) snap on the keeper strap"
So, Moose......................looks like you'll be eating something other than hat come Christmas op2: |
