Geeky slipjoint
I started off my second folding knife attempting to use liners and bolsters, but quickly decided to lose the bolsters and take a couple baby steps with just the liners. I actually adhered the micarta to the liners prior to drilling a single hole, which made things a lot easier when it came time to set the location of the pivot hole.
And since I opted against the bolsters, I decided to try a shield inset. I did it all by freehanding a dremel with engraving bit. I'm not actually too happy with the accuracy of the cut (though it's decent), and I will probably use a template in the future, like the ones Tracy sells. Other than that, I learned to keep a close eye on the scribe lines - one slip-up on the belt grinder and this went from a barlow-ish shape to what you see here. I had to rework the entire geometry of the tang due to that half-second of inattentiveness. Lookin' good, Kurt! One of these days I'm gonna have to do a folder...
And are you implying Star Trek is geeky? Never! |

Thanks Alan!
As for geeky... when I showed to my wife she said "I love this thing on the handle. What is it?". After explaining that it was a stylized Enterprise insignia she said, "Oh God, you're such a geek.". __________________ Kurt Huhn pipecrafter@pipecrafter.com http://www.pipecrafter.com |

My wife says that to me all the time, I've never understood why...
On the other hand, only one person has ever recognized the Next Generation com badge emblem on my briefcase, so she may be on to something. |

Very nice Kurt! I'm working on my 2nd slipjoint right now. I can only hope it comes out as nice as yours. How was the O1 to work with? Did the spring come out the way you wanted?

Kurt, You can get a lot of different shields and templets from Great Lakes Waterjet at a nice price. As for the knife I actually like the handle style.
Thanks for sharing. Curtis __________________ Curtis Wilson Wilson's Custom Knives, Engraving, and Scrimshaw |

Thanks guys!
Dave, O1 is my favorite steel. It and I have come to an understanding, it seems, and we work well together. The spring is exactly how I wanted it. I maybe could have lightened the preload by relieving it with some file work, but I love the nice solid snap on open and close. I started using it on folders because I can get it precision ground, but the cutting edge lasts forever, which is very important ina daily use knife. I think it's a great steel for this use. Funny thing is, I showed this to a couple guys and all of them were astounded with the quality of work. Some of them remarked that the style might not be their first choice (understandable) but they could find no fault with workmanship. I, on the other hand, could point out half a dozen flaws without even looking at the knife. It's the curse of the artisan - you can find flaw with anything you make, and ways to improve, even though others think its perfect. __________________ Kurt Huhn pipecrafter@pipecrafter.com http://www.pipecrafter.com |
