Neo-Tribal Knife In The Hat (Drawing Results!)

By popular demand, there shall be a Knife In The Hat (kith) featuring your "Signature" Neo-Tribal style.

Because every knifemaker has a different style, and every maker has a different experience level, the rules shall be rather loose on this one. Think of them as guidelines.

Make a knife that demonstrates your signature style. This is easier if you are an established maker, and actually have a signature style. The challenge for us newbies is to look back, and see what sort of knife came more naturally, seemed "right", and is something we're likely to develop.

The range of acceptable knives shall be limited from no less than 3 inches in length to no more than 15, measured as blade length. Single or double edged are acceptable. A sheath is preferred, but is not required - although some sort of carry/display furniture is sure to be well appreciated.

All steels are acceptable. Bragging rights will be awarded for most interesting choice that remains within the realm of functional cutting tool.

IMPORTANT NOTE
This exchange should represent your best effort, within reason. I will only name names to make a point. I do not expect a smith of Tai's quality to send me a multi-thousand dollar knife as his "best effort". On the flip side, relatively newer makers like Carl (CWP) should focus on fit and finish, but cannot be held to the same standards as the masters of forging. Do your best as you see fits within trading amongst friends. Everyone is encouraged to make this a learning experience.

A NOTE ON NEO-TRIBALISM
As I posted in an earlier thread, "Neotribalism is an art form, a method of craftsmanship that pays homage to tradition while finding innovative ways to fold in the new with it, so that the art of knifemaking (in our case) is constantly re-invented. That's what makes it so undefinable." Let us honor the spirit of NT during this one.

Sign-up to be done by email, to:

nt_knife_in_the_hat@hotmail.com

Entrants are to send:
1. True name
2. Forum handle
3. Shipping address
4. VALID email address

Sign-ups will end 1 day before the drawing which is...

DRAWING DATE: Labor Day, September 6, 2004. KNIVES SHOULD BE COMPLETED BY THIS DATE. Knives should be in the mail within a week of the drawing. IF YOU CANNOT MAKE THE DEADLINE, PLEASE DO NOT SIGN UP. This isn't meant to discourage people from participating, but the most hurt feelings on this forum come from broken promises like this. If you want to play, then Play. In the interest of transparency, I have been guilty of this too often, and will not put my own name on the list unless I complete a knife, ready for shipping, prior to the drawing.

THIS THREAD IS FOR SIGNUPS ONLY. DO NOT POST QUESTIONS HERE - USE THE EXISTING THREAD, OR START A NEW ONE FOR DISCUSSION PLEASE.
This will make my life easier - check back to make sure your name made it on the list.

That's it - have fun, hammer on, and let's get some knives made!

Regular post is usually fine. Send it registered if you're really worried about it. Usually "gift" is enough for a declaration - insurance is totally up to you.

I'll get the to/from shipping emails out this evening, I hope. Playing Mr. Mom today.

Actually this is not totally true, at least from my experience. Paul Harm sent me a vise he had made throught the post office. All I got was an opened, empty box. Luckly he had insured it for $100, but when I went to file the claim, the manager of the Post Office said that I had to offer "proof" of the value. The sales receipt was not good enough. According to her, I had to find a similar item in a printed catalog. So if you are sending a custom knife and it gets lost or damaged, how do you offer "proof" of it's value?

I will not use the Post Office for anything other than a letter. It's UPS or FEDEX for me. I know this is probably an exception rather than the norm, but why take the chance with a one-of-a-kind item?

A bit of advice. Don't identify the item except as a "gift".
makes life little easier

Same here, it may be more expensive, but it sure is safer. Im not a big UPS fan, they seem to bash the packages a bit, but FED EX is really good at what they do. There are very few companies that get this much respect from me, actually Id say maybe 3 or 4 companies. Fed Ex, Guitar Center.....and two that Ill probably think of later.

Im willing to spend the money to make sure no one is disappointed.
