Throwing knife

I made a throwing knife, but it hits as often as it misses, usually less. For my next one, how should it be balanced/shaped? My first was like this: (front.middle/back) pointy/wide/thin to make the front part heavier. is that right?

That's a hard question to answer. Different styles work better with different balances and shapes. It has alot more to do with style and skill then with the knife itself. Have you thrown other knives that worked alot better for you? If so then make one with a similer shape and balance to that. If not, then even with the most perfect throwing knife in the world you'll miss more then not and just need to practice.

I used to be pretty good at throwing knives when I was younger, and while I'm pretty rusty now I can still do ok. I like throwing smaller knives, around 6"-10"OAL, and preferably dagger shaped like a sykes-fairborn commando knife, using a quick throw with multiple rotations. A few months ago I visited Hammerdownnow and we were playing with his throwing knives. He likes the big ones (12"+) with the widest point of the blade right near the point to make it tip heavy, these are thrown to minimize rotation and keep the point flying forward. When I tried to throw these I could barely hit the target at all let alone stick it, I don't think I got it to stick a single time, just because it's not the way I've practiced.

Now, now Andy, we only thru about 3 times apiece.( my 6 year old was putting on a show for us) Next time you come up we will have a good session and you will gain a new appreciation for the long knife. Metal, did you check out the throwzinni site there should be some local throwers for you to get with in Calli.
