One or two more from the bookshelves
Penknives and other Folding Knives Simon Moore Shire, Princes Risborough, 1988 ISBN 085263966X 32 page booklet covering folding knives from Roman and Viking up to modern art knives. This is a nice little book and well worth picking up if you can get one. It is out of print but Shire do reprints every now and then. European Swords Stephen Bull Shire, Princes Risborough, 1994 ISBN 0747802343 Another 32 page booklet, skipping through the sword from Spanish falcata's to the British 1912 pattern cavalry sword. A 'poor man's Oakeshott' The Sword in Anglo-Saxon England Hilda Ellis Davidson Boydell, Woodbridge, 1962 ISBN 0851153550 hbk 085115716S pbk H.R. Ellis Davidson as she normally appears, was one of the foremost scholars of the Anglo-Saxon and Northern European world, ranking alongside Tolkien. This book deals with the archaeology of the sword and also the literature surrounding it. Illustrations are by Oakeshott who also made his collection available to the author - he probably had more than the British Museum! Roger |

New book on Viking Swords
Boy! if Roger Gregory was upset about a few Pounds, he's going to hate me for this one.
I just got a new book on viking swords that I feel is a must buy. But it's a bit on the pricey side ($90 US). Swords Of The Viking Age Ian Peirce, Ewart Oakeshott, Lee A. Jones The Boydell Press, Woodbridge December, 2002 ISBH: 0 85115 914 1 This book leads off with an introduction to Viking Swords by Oakeshott. Peirce, then catalogs over sixty swords in collections public and private, in great detail. Jones completes the work with a detailed study of the pattern welding used in some of the cataloged examples. This is perhps the definative book on the viking sword. It also details a very few examples of other types of viking blades __________________ Scott B. Scott, I am never upset at having to buy a new book even at academic prices......
http://www.boydell.co.uk/vik1.htm I didn't realise until I went to look at that link to the new book that Ewart Oakeshott died last September. Roger |

Yes, we lost the greatest man I never knew. The good news is that his collection is being preserved, with plans to open it to the public.
This book is most likely the last published work we will have from Ewart Oakeshott __________________ Scott B. I recently scanned the Dirks and Miscellaneous edged weapons portion of the book Scottish Swords and Dirks and posted it in 10 pages on the backside of my website (presently you can't get to it except from the following link so be sure and bookmark it!) Note for those on dialup some of the images are pretty big so be patient - it's worth it.
SCOTTISH SWORDS & DIRKS Hope you all find it of interest. PS I'll eventually get the Swords portion included with it. I'll announce it when I do. __________________ Chuck Burrows Hand Crafted Leather & Frontier Knives dba Wild Rose Trading Co Durango, CO chuck@wrtcleather.com www.wrtcleather.com The beautiful sheaths created for storing the knife elevate the knife one step higher. Here's an image of the cover of a book mentioned above by Chuck. I just got this from Mark Zalesky, Knife World Publications. He said there's an even better one on this subject by Gordon Minnis (?title) but it's out of print and hard to find. Anybody have the book (and maybe want to sell it?), or know anything about it? I understand these are both considered excellent references on American Frontier blades.

The book you are looking for by Gordon Minnis is:
"American Primitive Knives: 1770-1880" I don't know why Mark said it's out of print since it's available from www.crazycrow.com - at least it's in their current catalog, Item # 4175-014-057 price is $24.50 plus S/H here's the link to the product in their on line catalog. http://www.crazycrow.com/Merchant2/m...Category_Code= It's also available from www.trackofthwolf.com __________________ Chuck Burrows Hand Crafted Leather & Frontier Knives dba Wild Rose Trading Co Durango, CO chuck@wrtcleather.com www.wrtcleather.com The beautiful sheaths created for storing the knife elevate the knife one step higher. The british Museum Press is slated to release a new title early next year. It's expensive at $100 for the preorder. But that is a lot better then the price after April ($170) "British Iron Age Swords and Scabbards" I figure I better head on over and put in my preorder. __________________ Scott B. "Swords Of The Viking Age" was covered earlier in this thread.
"Die Saxe Von Valsgarde" is also in my collection. But I didn't mention it because....well..... it's very out of print and not something most makers are going to be able to get, let alone read. But then, the internet has made rare book searches much more available to all. My copy however is suffering from a failed binding. If you can read it, it is an amazing source. The information is somewhat dated. but the depth of coverage on the topic is amazing. And there are examples of artifacts not seen in other source material. __________________ Scott B. Hello folks, There are a couple of books by John Baldwin, Early Knives & Beaded Sheaths of the American Frontier, and Tomahawks-Pipe Axes of the American Frontier. Both are filled with clear pictures and descriptions of items from collections. Neither is a huge book, 81 pgs. for the first one, and 128 for the later, and they are a bit spendy for their small size, $75.00 each, but they are packed with good pics. and info. and they are still in print, unlike Petersons tomahawk book which sells near $5-600.00 in the used book market last I checked.

Here is another great source that I'm suprised hasn't been mentioned yet. How is this for a Title:
"A GLOSSARY OF THE CONSTRUCTION, DECORATION AND USE OF ARMS AND ARMOR IN ALL COUNTRIES AND IN ALL TIMES TOGETHER WITH SOME CLOSELY RELATED SUBJECTS" (whew). By George Cameron Stone It has every edged weapon you can imagine. This is available in paperback now at very reasonable prices. Bob |
