New Pics Of My Entry

The pic I sent Ray earlier was terrible, settings were messed up. These are new pics with everything fixed, and also some bonus shots of the leather scabbard I made to protect the blade and also if out at a BBQ and you want to look cool. Hope these are better.

Tony,
Is that a slight hollow grind I'm seeing?

No on the hollow grind. Just looks that way from the sun and shine on the blade. Full flat grind.

Since I'm behind schedule and potentially holding things up, I feel compelled to show a quick progress report. Scales were affixed a couple of days ago.

Just finished shaping the handle. On to fine sanding and finishing.

Back to the shop.

Radar, it always exciting when the handle or scales are shaped and finished and the final product is nearly done! I think it looks great and looking forward to see it complete. Do you use the small pins to align the scales while gluing and then add the Corby's? I like the look of the pins and the Corby's.

Thanks for your compliments, I'm still new at this, just a few complete knives under my belt. In this case, the small pins are basically decorative, on smaller knives, parers and such, I only use the small pins. As for the corbys,, I usually leave the holes a bit loose with the theory that the epoxy will fill in the "slop" and lock things together.

I agree, that adding and shaping the scales really makes the project come to life. I free-hand the shaping on the belt grinder and check for symmetry and hand-feel along the way, gripping the knife in several grips that I feel the user will grip it in use. This one balances really well, I'm stoked to take it for a test drive before sending it of to its new home.

I've worked wood for, wow, 30+ years, and similarly, there are a couple of "excitement points" one being assembly of the project, the next, finishing. The latter, being the most tense, and if all goes well, the most rewarding of the entire project, if it doesn't, it's the most frustrating. There is a lot that can go wrong and completely wreck a project in the stroke of the brush but if the previous steps have been tended to, things generally go well.

Fingers crossed, moving forward.

-Kurt

Still time to enter?

What are the swapping rules? Silent judging like the last one?

Eli,

If you have a knife ready, or can get one in a couple of days, you can still enter. The rating system will be the same as last time ...

Thanks. This has been a good learning experience for me. It's forced me to try a number of different things that I have been wanting to do, but hadn't built up the confidence to try. I guess that's what these are all about, eh?

I do have one ready. I'm going to make one last effort to sell it but if it doesn't, and I doubt it will, then I'll throw it in. Its a nice reverse edge paring knife. I'll email you the pics.

Kurt,

Yes, that is what these KITHs are all about!

Eli,

Sounds good but don't send the pics until you're ready to commit the knife...
