Scandinavian style bolster question
I was looking at some of the tutorials for bolsters, and was noticing that they all seemed to be for a full tang. I came across one suggestion at http://www.britishblades.com/forums/...ead.php?t=7024
I was wondering if you needed pins for this kind of bolster, and where the materials could be gotten to make them or buy them. Thanks for all the help. |

most scandi knives have a stick tang, not a full tang. the area next to the blade can be squared flat with a small cutoff disc or grindstone on a dremel. as the link shows ,if it is rounded ,the bolster can be filed a bit for the blade to fit flush or slightly into the bolster. there is no need to pin anything if a good epoxy is used, try the search function for "glue wars" and you find what to use.

Thanks for your help. I was just making sure that I don't need any pins. Any reccomendations on building bolsters for scandi knives? Material sizes or traditional materials used in scandi knives?

many scandi's have no bolsters at all. the blade is flush or pushed slightly into the handle. whatever materials are availible in your area will work. modern scandi's use most anykind of wood, bolsters made from brass ,deer antler ,buffalo horn, etc. tradidional scandi's will use deer antler with birch bark spacers and usually curly (masur) birch for the handle. photo of scandi blade with maple wood and stacked birch bark handle.

Hi Wilhelm:
There are many tutorials for making a Puukko. I like them. They can have a hidden tang or a tang that goes all the way through the handle and is peened over (hard for me to do) or a nut is installed on the end. Here is a link to a Puukko tutorial: http://www.northcoastknives.com/nort...als_puukko.htm Have fun with it. |
