What i am doing while being silent....
Hi All!
Well, i didn't post a lot lately, but that doesn't mean that i am dead or lazy. This monday i finally made a wootz ingot completely from my own self made basic material. This means, this ingot was made using bloomery steel and bloomery furnace cast iron i made myself on two different occasions, in 2003 in Paimpont, France and in 2004 in Solingen, Germany. The bloom from Paimpont was even made using indian ore from Goa and had just the right vanadium content for making wootz. So with getting and preparing the raw material like charcoal and ore and clay, building and preparing the furnaces and running them and melting the steel to form this ingot, it's the result of about 70 to 80 hours of work and there's still a lot of work to do until it will be a blade. Lots of fun, too. The cooling time between liquidus and solidus was about 120 minutes and the ingot clearly shows the dendritic crystallization on the top. The "rim" is the result of the glassy slag that was molten out of the bloomery material, but even under the glass the dendrites are visible. Achim |

I will definitely keep you updated on what i will be doing with it. Next step is the diffusion heating to make it forgeable.
This weekend i started forging on a 1.6 kilo stainless "wootz" crucible steel ingots. After about 50 heats working with a 35 kilo Kuhn power hammer it now is square, but just square and not more. Hard stuff. I ground off the crust on one side and etched it and it starts showing very, very beautiful designs. I'll try to show more soon. Achim |

Most definately keep us up to date. I would love to have the time to venture into making some ingots.
The pattern is beautiful just as it is. __________________ I am smiling |
