Question on Swede Knife

A friend handed me this knife the other day and said, "See what you can do with it."

Nice blade that has "ESKILSTUNA SWEDEN" stamped on the side. Someone used the handle as a hammer, and the end is in very bad shape.

Question: Clean up the blade, re-edge, and put a new handle on it? Or should I leave it as-is?

For some reason, This Old Knife forum didn't show up on my list the other day, so I posted this under Historic Inspiration. I moved it today.

A few have looked, but none replied. Whaddya think? New handle?

BTW, the brass piece on here is not solid; it's just a ring.

If it was me i would clean the blade up, put a new handle on it and make him a sheath.
Give the nice old blade a new life!

Oh, yeah, I didn't even mention the sheath! The guy that sent this to my neighbor 'made' a sheath for it. Pretty bad - looks like a scrap of some sort of fake leather. Yeah, a new sheath is a necessity.
