Best steel for damascus?

I plan on using 1084 and 15n20. I'm gonna try some simple patterns. What thickness 15n20 should I get? I have some 1/8inch 1084 but will get more when I order the 15n20. Should I get different thickness or the same? maybe thinner to make it less work to get more layers. I plan on converting a logsplitter but might have to try by hand first. Any advice is welcome.

I've been making some damascus by hand since I don't have a press or a power hammer. I use 1080 and 15N20. I get my 1080 3/16" thick and the 15N20 .095 thick. You can get it thinner but when you're taking it to welding heat the thinner stuff tends to start pulling apart in the bundle even with the sides welded together. Also the thicker bars hold the heat better. Make sure the 1080 (1084 in your case) is on the outside of the billet on both sides. I usually go with 5-7 layers to start. Much more than that and it starts to get tough reducing the billet. It's long hard work by hand but it is rewarding when you're finished.
