Giraffebone
Hi I am interested in using Giraffe bone for a knife handle having never used it before I have a few questions .
Have any one had some experience with this bone ? the colours I guess are stains added to the bone so will i loose the colours in the cracks when I shape the handle ? Will I grind the stabilisation out when shaping ? Cheers Lee |

NO and no. Giraffe bone is stabilized and stained through the whole piece. Easy stuff to work and if you sand it to about 800 grit before buffing you will get a very high polish on it.

Experiment/test on part of it if you do not intend to use every bit. Some suppliers aren't as reputable as others and you can get some that is poorly done.
Otherwise I agree completely with Stephen on finishing. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |
