Stains
I'd like to hear the pros and cons of oil based stains and water based stains.

I have not used any of the Eco Glow dyes and as for oil based dyes such as Fiebings in fact have no oil in them - they are an upgrade of their standard spirit (alcohol/toluene, etc.) based dyes - why in the world they called them oil based is still a mystery to me after 50+ years beating on leather - other than back in the good ole days we often added oil to the spirit dyes to make them "better".
I generally use the standard spirit dyes from Fiebeings or Angelus - those that do use the oil dyes say they get better penetration and in the case of black less rub off, but I never noticed a big difference when I did a comparison. As always others will have their prefernces __________________ Chuck Burrows Hand Crafted Leather & Frontier Knives dba Wild Rose Trading Co Durango, CO chuck@wrtcleather.com www.wrtcleather.com The beautiful sheaths created for storing the knife elevate the knife one step higher. I too have not had good results with the Eco-Flo dies and being that I don't live in California where I understand that the so called oil based dyes are hard to come by I will stick with them. I read the article by Will Ghormley that Chuck posted and it seams that they can be used to good results. Just make sure that you start out with good clean leather which you should be anyway.

Thanks for the feedback. After reading the article that Mr. Burrows posted I think I'll keep using Eco-
Flo products. Once again, I truly appreciate the information. Scott __________________ Folks crowd me. I like wild, lonesome country. I like the far-looking places. It aint in me to live with folks. It's the trees, the rivers, the lake and wild animals I need. |
