Got ANOTHER question
Hi Ed!
I had the chance to buy a few pieces of W-2 (3/4") rod, as I wanted to fiddle with doing some clay hardening and nice sharp temper lines . Have you worked with this steel before and,if so, are there any gotchas I need to be aware of when forging and heat treating? Thanks Ed! Dana |

Hi Dana!
Nothing special outside of what you already know about forging. On the heat treating end its a more shallow hardening steel that what you've been using, so you might have to play with a piece before making a sellable finished knife from it. Anytime I step outside my "normal" steels, I always make a test blade and ensure I've got things right, or if its a steel that I've used, but not in a while, to ensure I remember what I'm doing. I keep meaning to pick up some W-2, but never seem to get around to doing it. Keep us informed on how it goes for you. __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." |

Hi Ed. You might check with Don Hanson. I recently bought some of his larger (1.185 or so) W2. I already had some of his smaller stock. Rumor is he may be running low soon, but I bet he'd be glad to work with you.

Thanks Ed!
I actually got my W-2 from Tracey Mickley. I was ordering some footage of his power twist
link belt for my KMG when I saw that he also carried some round W-2. I think he has one 3/4" left and a few 1" rounds but there's not much left. Hopefully, I can squeeze out a couple of blades per 11" section Tracey told me that he actually did purchase his W-2 from Don Hanson, as Robert mentioned. What got me interested in trying my hand at W-2 was a bowie that Bruce Bump had for sale on his table next to me at the Blade West. He did the clay coating and heat treating and made a pretty cool looking temper line. I'm always going in about 20 different directions trying something new! I could probably get a lot more knives out the door if I wasn't always so "distracted: ! Thanks again, Dana |
