Soldering a browned finger guard
I was practising some file work on a piece of A36 flat bar, and it turned out well enough that I want to use it as a finger guard. For a finish I was thinking of using barrel brown.
I like soldering finger guards to my blades. My questions are, Will silver solder temperatures effect the finish? Will it even stick to the brown? Has anyone tried browning a finger guard after it is on the knife? If you think this would be more suitable on another forum please let me know which one. Thanks, Bob |

I have used three different browning solutions and was not happy with any of them. At one or two coats you get a splotchy rusted color and with more coats you get a very dark finish that is closer to black then brown. The one that gave me the least problems was laurel mountain degreaser and barrel brown.
If you don't like the color just vinegar soak it overnight and try it again. Good luck! |

Hi Bob!
If the guard is already "browned" before you solder, it won't be afterward. The heat will wreck the brown. If your going to solder it, your only real choice is to solder the guard in place, then mask off whatever you don't want "browned" and then color/recolor the guard. There are so many different products out there for "browning" that I can't say for sure if solder will or will not stick to them. I can tell you that Birchwood Casey stuff is almost like "anti-flux" meaning that where ever it is, solder runs away from it....at least thats been my experience with that particular brand. Let us know how it turns out! __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." |

Thanks guys. I think I'll try soldering first then brown. It's hard enough getting a decent looking solder joint.
