Be brave and straighten!!
I did something a few days ago that was an expansive sort of eureka! learning experience that I'd like to share. I had read on SwordForum that when you harden a blade, after is drops below critical, it still takes 2-3 minutes for the internal structure to "gel" and that you have a window of opportunity to tweak a warped blade, even though it will be glass hard and immovable directly. The 1095 blade I quenched came out of the oil noticably warped, I immediately stuck it in the vise and bent it straight with no problem. I was amazed, the stuff had an almost rubbery feel to it and moved easily. It was just cool enough to handle. It takes some confidence to do this as we all have learned to step softly around full hard steel before tempering but it really works!. |
