Third Knife and Sheath: 1095 and Antler (pics of second sheath added)
Hi Everyone
This is my third knife and sheath. I made it for a buddy of mine that is a policeman and a hunter. I had drawn a few designs and this was the one he liked best. I will surprise him with it on his birthday coming up. He had taken me bow hunting my first time out when I found a mule deer antler shed. I was still working on the blade when I found the antler and I thought it was fitting for his knife. I dyed the antler black to represent his uniform and the red spacer in the guard represents his uniform stripes. The guard frontal profile is that of a shield. I blacked out the sheath and gave it a basic basketweave pattern as if it was part of his gun belt. I have taken your critique and tried to make a more aesthetically pleasing sheath. It is a cross-draw sheath meant to be worn on the left side or left of center. I hope you like it, it's been a lot of work to do with hand files. 5/32" 1095 differentially heat treated with clay 1084 guard with red fibre spacer Mule Deer antler crown handle dyed black Blade is 6 3/4" from tip to guard Leather sheath Your comments and critique is always welcomed. Thanks for looking Brett [IMG] ![]() [IMG] ![]() [IMG] ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Bowman; 02-15-2014 at 10:04 PM. |

I literally said, out loud, to myself, "wow" especially if done with all files... Kudos mate!
The only critique I can give is maybe I would consider doing a fold over sheath instead. The knife is super sleek and beautiful, and the sheath seems to be wide for the blade... its a great job, it was just the only thing I could comment on. *Edit* I love the blade profile, Last edited by WynnKnives; 02-06-2014 at 09:03 PM. |

I am not really happy with the finish on this sheath. It feels like plastic and that's not what I like. Live and learn, I will try something else the next time. |

Blade design somewhat dictates the larger look of the sheath. If the false edge is the least bit sharp, a pouch would not work well.
Couple of things you might try: Move your stitching further in toward the inside of the welt, have to measure carefully. You can then reduce the sheath from the outside edge a little. Another thing that will reduce the appearance of the width of the sheath is to taper your welts to the outside edge and skive the front and back's edges (on the under or inside) to a taper at the perimeter margins. This will produce a curved surface profile that produces the appearance of a narrower sheath. Use a bone folder to burnish the edges round. Will actually help with the blocky look as well. Wax/oil sealer will give a softer finished look. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

Several applications of Neets Foot oil will make it feel softer.

Thanks Carl. Those are some good points I will certainly remember. Basically, minimize the welt to reduce the sheath profile and skive the welt to reduce the thickness of the sheath at the edge. I like this profile so I will likely make another one similar in the future. The swage is not sharpened so a pouch style or split-toe might be more appropriate. The finish is Fiebings Tan-Kote. I think I'll try a wax/oil finish next time to reduce the gloss.

I use tan-kote as well, but I apply then wipe off before it sets just leaving what soaks in. Leaves a softer matte finish.

What are you using to wipe on and off the Tankote? I've redesigned the sheath for this knife so hopefully I can improve on the second round. |

I either "paint" it on with a small acid brush or swipe it on with a small chunk of foam (depends on size of sheath). I insert a small flat stick Like a ruler so I have a handle. Do a complete side or panel at a time, give it a second or two then wipe excess off with a clean rag. Second coating will make it shiny so do it right first time.
If you are looking for a "softer" finish, there is a recipe down in the Sheath & Holster section here on KNF in one of the Stickies that explains the "hot dip" oil/wax formula. Takes some practice, but gives a great finish as well. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

Thank you all for the feedback. I have made a second sheath taking your advice in mind. I went with a pouch type sheath designed to cross draw with the right hand. I narrowed the welt and used a finer thread. I also changed the finish product. As for the design, I like this one better for this knife. It is almost as wide but longer which looks more proportioned to the handle. I also like that it protects the guard.
Tell me what you think. Brett |

Well, that's not exactly a pouch sheath.....maybe more of a hybrid but whatever it is its an eye catcher. Looks good to me ....
