Plow Steel

Got a single sweep blade edge, got a peice of it and ground an edge onto it straight out of the field, I could shave me arms with it as it was. So ground a blade out of one edge, just don't know wether its oil hardening or water hardening. I may just super heat a peice of each and quench in water and oil, and temper to 500 for an hour and see what I get Pretty sure they're John Deere or Case brand, what would you guys do?

I would just buy a piece of known steel and HT accordingly. When it comes to my time, sweat, and a possible no return for it, I am not much of a gambler.

It used to be that plow blades were made from good ole 10-series steel, anything from 1060 up to 1095... Those days are gone, these days they could be anything. Odds are good it will harden in oil, tempering may take a bit of experimentation to home in on (start at 400f and keep bumping it up 25 degrees until it stops chipping). WBE is right, buying some known cutlery grade steel is your best bet.
