New handle for old schrade.
Hey Guys,
I thought this fit more here than anywhere else. A friend has an old schrade 15t, his dad carried it in the late 60s and 70s, and gave it to him it the 80s. Several years ago the leather handle decided to desintigrate in a couple places, so it got put away. SInce I've got into making knives, and he likes my work (crazy guy), he has asked me to re-do the handle. He specified shortening it slightly, maybe some finger notches, and not another leather handle. Otherwise I have artistic leave.... The handle has molded from the moose blood that was soaked into it over the years. You can tell where the original edge has been "cut" back with the sharpening over the years. A couple monthes ago he gave me this big piece of walnut wood that his dad cut from a stump, in the states, in the 70s or 80s. I thought it would be fitting to put it on the knife. I did a slight guard to go with the finger notches, mortised the tang into the handle, shortened it about 3/4", and get this......Ruened it while cooling a hot guard while doing the final shaping. The wood got wet and warped/twisted. I gound down/drove out the pins. Ahhh....S Well..... I'm taking a couple days off, and I'll get back to try again on Saturday. Comments? Critisisms? To be honest I just needed to *tell* somebody, vent kinda... Gary __________________ http://ak-adventurer.net/ Gary Blessing, Ex-custom knife maker, Ex-Folder modifier & embelisher. |

If that is the first time you made a mistake then I am impressed!
I have a Schrade 160OT blank that I am finishing. I have put two guards on it and it still isn't right. Gonna have to try a third time. I don't think the guard Schrade put on the 160OTs looks good. They are two piece and apparently pinned together. I thought they suck. I want to do a one piece so it is a bit more difficult. I hate wasting brass. Let us see it when finished. It looks like you have a good start. Dale |

If you want something handier than the an air hose, get one of those CO2 canisters used to blow dust out of computers/electronics. The high pressure gas chills as it passes through the tube, and can actually cause frost to form on some objects for a short time. No need to get tangled up in the hose, just keep the can on your workbench and give it a blast from time to time.

Or maybe just dip it in water every once in awhile. Getting it wet and letting it dry raises the grain of the wood and lets you sand it much smoother.

If you put a couple of coats of Varathane on it prior to the finishing the guard and also during the polishing period it shouldn't warp any on you.let it dry for about 24 hours after the Varathane goes on. Plus this will add to the woods luster when polished out.
