Evapo-rust
Some of you know that we moved, then due to an injury I was delayed in setting the shop back up. We're in MI. and now I've got quite a few things that are "patina'd". I found a thread on the Shopsmith forum about this product. Has anyone here used it?
Thanks in advance. Julie __________________ Today I'm becoming who I once dreamed to be. |

Hi Julie!
I've heard of it, and have spoken to a few knifemakers who have tried it. From what I've heard, it does it's specific job well, but it does have some drawbacks.... First, items have the tendency to "flash rust" if you don't take the time to rinse, dry, and oil/lube/wax whatever you put in it, immediately after you take the item(s) out of it. It's ONLY a rust remover....once the item(s) are removed from the product, additional steps are required to ensure rust doesn't return. If a person doesn't have another method (such as a bead blast cabinet), then this stuff might be a good solution. If you decide to go with it, come back and give us your opinion.....I suspect it might have some good applications in the knife shop. __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." |

I've got plenty of applications for it to be used here, I'll be taking notes as I get busy, getting busy. And report back here shortly with results. Some YouTube videos for those interested. Locating it.
Found two local stores that carry it by the gallon, I'm restoring a Civil War era book press that needs immersion so I ordered a 5 gallon bucket. Here's what I found so far.
Local dealerships that carry it in store: Harbor Freight- Evapo-Rust? 1 Gallon- Item #96431 $21.99 Tractor Supply Store- 1 Gallon, SKU Number:1340932 - $21.99 Online order: Northern Tool- 5-Gallon, Item #334501 ? $79.99 w/shipping $29.26 @$109.25 or 21.85/Gallon. We lost our local area ACE Hardware I had to order my LPS3 online __________________ Today I'm becoming who I once dreamed to be. Last edited by Julie Coffey; 04-14-2012 at 03:19 PM. |

I did a little searching on it (as I've never run across it before). I was a little surprised at the low toxicity advertised and that the pH is close to neutral. Most rust removal chemicals I've seen in the past contain acids or acidic salts. My understanding is that this is a chelating chemical that binds the iron oxides into the Evapo-rust. Once it's removed, the surface will rust almost immediately unless steps are taken to prevent it.

In the past I've used Scotchbrite pads, steel wool, WD-40 and elbow grease, wire wheels, and even Muratic acid. The latter was on a HUGE 20' SS sculpture the school had used carbon wire wheels to texture for aesthetics instead of investing in SS wire wheels, the rust just blossomed in the scratches. BTW, I don't like using Muratic at all!
Guys on the Shopsmith Forum use a variety of methods to remove rust from the lift/way tubes including electrolysis. I have no trouble paste waxing or LPS3'ing everything but in MI. as I'm sure it is in a lot of other high humidity regions if you let it get away from you, there is a lot more work involved in catching up with it. I'm excited to see what it can do. __________________ Today I'm becoming who I once dreamed to be. |
