Finding 1080 or 1084
I'd like to hear from those who have recently purchased one of these steels so that I can see who has it in stock at this time. I would like to hear about both US and Canadian suppliers.
So, if you have it where did you get it? UPDATE: For Canada: http://www.knifemaker.ca/home.php?cat=305 Aldo at http://newjerseysteelbaron.com/ Kelly Cupples can be reached by email at octihunter@charter.net or by phone 509-949-5231 USA Knifemakers http://www.USAKNIFEMAKERS.com Admiral Steel www.admiralsteel.com Last edited by Ray Rogers; 02-23-2015 at 07:38 PM. |

My go to guys are Rob and Marilyn at Canadian Knifemaker Supply (near Calgary).
They have 1084 available in 1/8", 5/32", 3/16" & 1/4" in 1-1/2" and 2". Sold by the inch. http://www.knifemaker.ca/home.php?cat=305 Regards, Dan __________________ "Don't believe everything you know." -- bumper sticker Last edited by DanCom; 12-15-2014 at 09:12 PM. Reason: 1/4" as well |

I purchased my 1080 through Admiral Steel and my
1084 from Aldo. Both had stock when I bought mine. |

New Jersey Steel Barron has 1080 and 1084.
Their 1080 comes in a square bar at .75" or 1" at 40" lengths. Their 1084 comes as a flat bar in 4 thicknesses, 18 widths and 48" length. Prices are very competitve. After a recent purchase of 3" wide 1095, they are my new favorite supplier. __________________ Andy Garrett https://www.facebook.com/GarrettKnives?ref=hl Charter Member - Kansas Custom Knifemaker's Association www.kansasknives.org "Drawing your knife from its sheath and using it in the presence of others should be an event complete with oos, ahhs, and questions." |

Ray,
Rember the "old" days, when we could get steel on a whim, and from just about any place we could choose? Things sure have changed over the years....now its become a "buy it when/if you find it". Personally I get my damascus stock from Kelly Cupples in Yakima, WA., barstock from Aldo, and stainless from Specialty metals (Scott Davanna and co.) The only place I trust for 1084 is Aldo. __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." |

Thanks everybody. Those are places I usually recommend myself but I haven't bought any 1084 in quite a while and, like Ed said, things have changed so I wanted an update. And, I thought having it spelled out in one spot could help some of the new guys.
So, to sum it up and flesh it out we have: For Canada: http://www.knifemaker.ca/home.php?cat=305 Aldo at http://newjerseysteelbaron.com/ Kelly Cupples can be reached by email at octihunter@charter.net or by phone 509-949-5231 USA Knifemakers http://www.USAKNIFEMAKERS.com Last edited by Ray Rogers; 10-26-2018 at 08:31 AM. |

yes we need more resources in Canada......
O1 is plentiful at a reasonable price and my go to for tool/carbon still cheaper to ship stainless from the states in decent quantities to my sisters in Seattle and then up to the Great White North........ stainless pricing up here makes me wait patiently from the south when in need of it.... I may start shipping to my summer cottage in Wauconda Wa .. __________________ R.Watson B.C. Canada |

I've bought from most of the suppliers listed above, but usually just go to Aldo. He's a hoot to talk to.
Jerry/Admiral is also a gentleman and will do his best to get you what you want. Kelly will sell you what he has, ship quickly and you know it's good........guess I like dealing with individuals.....all good. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

Like most makers, I have used these same suppliers for years. The only thing that I might add for the newer makers is when ordering Damascus steel(s) to have either Kelly or Aldo cut it into 6"pieces. Not only will this save time when making up a billet but will save you shipping costs. I often find myself ordering whatever will fit into a "one rate" box rather than "give me x number of pounds". I just got a box of 1080 and 15n20 cut to damascus billet length from Kelly not to long ago. Anyone who doesn't know if you order atleast $100 worth he ships it for free.
